According to the National Eye Institute, the most common cause of eye injuries for children is sports, with baseball the leading cause for ages 14 and younger, and basketball the number one cause for ages 15-24. Over half of children participate in sports, yet there are almost no requirements to wear eye protection by youth sports leagues.
This is an opportunity for education and increased business for eye care providers. You don’t want any of your young patients to suffer a debilitating eye injury. As my father used to say, “Everything is fun and games until someone gets an eye poked out.” Make sure your practice has sports-specific eyewear in stock, and that your staff is thoroughly trained in it’s application.
